Purpose
The ELSS is jointly funded by a grant (Ethnic Minority achievement Grant/EMAG)
and by Bexley Council. The service is staffed by specialist teachers whose aims
are: to meet the educational and pastoral needs of all children with English as
an Additional language by raising ethnic minority achievement; developing language
competence; supporting newly arrived children and developing staff awareness of these issues.
What it provides
Direct language teaching; liaison with staff and parents; advice and training for teachers; access
to interpreting and translation; refugee support; liaison with relevant agencies.

How
The Head of Service leads fifteen teachers who speak a range of languages and are qualified
to teach English as an Additional Language. Administrative support is provided.
Ethnic minority achievement targets are set and reviewed. Referrals are taken
from the admissions department, schools and Social services. Individual pupil
support is allocated according to language need and GCSE demands.
