Educational Psychology & Assessment Service (EPAS)
Children and Student Services
About EPAS
EPAS supports children and young people who have difficulties
with learning or behaviour or both.
EPAS is staffed by educational psychologists who, in addition to teaching experience,
have first degrees and postgraduate, professional qualifications in psychology
– the science of how people think, feel and behave. Also part of the service
are assessment teachers who have developed expertise in the area of special needs
of children who go to mainstream school.
Psychologists and assessment teachers work with children and young people,
parents and teachers to gather information in order to advise on strategies and
plan programmes to help children make progress.
EPAS also provides training for teachers in meeting special educational needs
and advice for education officers and head teachers on planning for groups of
children, developing new approaches to help children learn.
If it is necessary for the LEA to carry out a statutory assessment under the
1996 Education Act, the educational psychologist will visit the home to see the
child and talk to the parents.
Contact with EPAS about pre-school children is usually made through the child’s
pre-school setting, doctor or health visitor.
Contact about school-age children should always be made though the school.
