School Organisation Plan and Committee

School OrganisationSchool Organisation Plan 2003 / 2008

This plan has been approved and adopted by the Bexley School Organisation Committee. The aim of the School Organisation Plan is to provide a clear statement and overview about the current and projected position for the next five years (2003 / 2008) with regards to:

  • the Council's policies and strategies in relation to school places, aimed at developing a better balance between the supply of and demand for school places and, in turn raising standards;
  • data for pupils, school capacities and surplus places; and
  • the action taken over school place re-organisation since publication of the last Plan, and possible further action that might be proposed over the period of the Plan.

It is a useful tool for Bexley, its partners and neighbouring authorities in their planning of school places. It also helps schools and the local communities to see where population and other changes might impact on the need for school places.

School Organisation Commitee

The School Organisation Committee (SOC) is central to the arrangements for local decision making. It takes the place of the Secretary of State in the decision-making process on school organisation proposals, and approves the School Organisation Plan for the area.

The SOC is not a committee of the Local Education Authority. It is a separate statutory body which brings together the key partners in the provision of education at a local level, ad gives each an equal voice. Members of the Bexley SOC comprise representatives of:

  • Serving school governors,
  • the Church of England,
  • the Roman Catholic Church,
  • the Learning & Skills Council (London East) and
  • elected members of Bexley Council.

The Bexley SOC meets annually to approve the School Organisation Plan (SOP), and as required to consider and determine proposal(s) for change(s) in school organisation.
