Electoral Registration
Frequently Asked Questions:
Answers
Who should respond to the Form?
The form should be completed and signed by a responsible
person at the property.
I have recently registered on a different form.
Do I have to complete this form as well?
Yes. Although your names may have been added to the
register they may not appear on the form. The forms are printed
at the beginning of July, therefore any alterations processed after
this date will not appear on the form. You must make these alterations
on the form.
Return to questions
Who should I put on the form?
Every adult who normally lives at your address (except
anyone listed as excluded in the section 'Who should not be registered?');

their date of birth);
Anyone who normally lives in your home but is temporarily
away (including students if they live at your address out of term
time and people in hospital);
Other residents, guests and lodgers who live at your
address; and
Merchant Seamen who live at your address when they
are not at sea.

Who should not be included on
the Form?
Children who will still be under 18 by 1 December
2008;

European Union citizens;
People who are long stay patients in psychiatric hospitals;
Convicted prisoners (but do include prisoners on remand).
Return to questions
Why do I have to state my nationality?
The Statutory form has changed and we are now required,
by law, to obtain this information. An individuals nationality is not published
in the register, it is merely used to ascertain each individuals voting rights.
How do I know if I am a Commonwealth
Citizen?
You can view a full list of all Commonwealth Countries
and British Dependencies here.
Return to questions
I am an EU Citizen and wish to vote in
European Parliamentary Elections. How do I go about this?
If you are a citizen of
an EU country you must state
your nationality on the form. We will then send you a form (called
a UC1) which must be completed if you wish to vote in European Elections
in respect of your UK address.
My mother/father have recently moved
into a nursing home. Where should they register?
The Warden/Matron will normally complete a form for
the home. Check that their details have been entered on the register
at that address. If their previous property is now empty, please
indicate this on the form and return it.
Return to questions
I am in the armed forces. How should
I register?
Service Voters can now choose whether to register
at their home address as civilians or using a specific annual declaration
as a Service Voter.
For further information please contact the Electoral
Services Team on 020 8294 6144/6146/6147 or email: elections.office@bexley.gov.uk.
Return to questions
I may be moving house before the 15 October 2007. What should I do?
Hold onto the form for now. If you do move before the qualifying
date simply cross out your name(s) and leave the form at the property for the
new residents.
If you know the property will be empty on the qualifying date
please state this on the form and return it in the prepaid envelope provided.
If you are still resident on the 15 October 2007 you should
return the signed form having made any amendments.
Return to questions
I own two properties can I register
at both?
Yes if you actually live in both (i.e. one at weekends
and one during the week) but it is illegal to vote more than once
at the same election (i.e. general election).
If you only live in one property you should not register
at the other property. Please mark the form as REGISTERED ELSEWHERE
and return it in the prepaid envelope provided.
My son/daughter is going to university
soon. Should they register here or at their term address?
They can register at either or both, although they
can only vote once in any election. We usually advise students to
register in respect of their home address and apply for a postal/proxy
vote for each election.
Return to questions
I don't want my name to show on the
register, what do I do?
The Registration Officer, by law, keeps two versions
of the register. The edited version omits the names of anyone who
indicates on the form that they do not want their details sold on.
You should tick the edited register box on the form.
Only certain people and organisations are lawfully
entitled to a copy of the full register, and they can only use
it for specified purposes. These include electoral purposes, the
prevention and detection of crime and checking your identity when
you have applied for credit.
Anonymous Registration -
Certain people can now apply to be entered anonymously on the register of electors.

I have lost/ruined my form. Can you
send me another one?
We will be sending out further forms to non responding
properties. Alternatively you may download an Electoral Registration Form here (1.28MB, PDF
file).
Return to questions
I have sent back my form but
realised I should have added/deleted someone or altered their details.
What do I do?
You may download
a new Electoral Registration Form here (1.28MB, PDF file).
Alternatively, you should contact The Electoral Services Team on 020
8294 6144/6146/6147 or email: elections.office@bexley.gov.uk
for a replacement.
I don't want to vote. Do I still have
to register/fill in the form?
Yes you are still required by law to register but
you do not have to vote. That is entirely up to you.
I have just received another form but I have already
sent the original one back. What should I do?
Reminder forms have been sent to every property that has not
already responded. The forms may well have crossed over, or been delayed, in
the post.
We would rather have two forms than none at all. So, please
return the reminder form as soon as possible. We will ensure any duplicates are
destroyed.
