Alleygate - A gate placed in an alleyway that when locked will prevent access.

What is an Alleygate?

An alleygate is just as it sounds, a gate placed in an alleyway that when locked will prevent access.

Why would I want an Alleygate?

An alleygate will help prevent burglary, which mainly occurs from the rear/side of properties. It will help reduce litter and fly tipping. It will also help keep out of the alleyway, unwanted visitors. This will lead to a cleaner and safer environment. For more information on improving safety, please see the Bexley Community Safety Partnership

If I want an alleyway gated, what do I need to do?

You need to contact all those neighbours who have a right of access to the alleyway.

You should attempt to form a small working group or Committee who can decide who does what, so that tasks can be shared.

Planning Permission may be required for the proposed gates depending on their size and location. It is suggested that advice is sought from the Planning Duty Officer on 020 8308 7992 or a copy of the proposals are sent to the planning department for comment at Wyncham House, 207 Longlands Road, Sidcup, Kent DA15 7JH before any works are undertaken. You will also need to check with the Council to see whether a public right of way exists over the alleyway.

Firstly, your group will need to assess each point of access for suitability. It is essential that there is a wall or fence at least 2 metres in height on either side, otherwise the gate will not prevent access. In these situations, it may be possible to have a wall or fence constructed to the desired height, providing the owner agrees and payment is shared along with the cost of the gate.

How do I obtain a gate and have it installed?

This design of gate and specification is suggested, which is free standing and will not affect adjacent property. You may however wish to fix to adjacent property for added strength.

When measuring for the gate size, which includes the frame, measure the width of the opening between walls/fences and deduct 0.2 metres (8 inches), to allow a 0.1 metre gap each side between gate frame and wall/fence.

The Council do have a list of suitable known fabricators, which can be supplied upon request. Alternatively, "Yellow Pages" provide similar details under Metal workers. It is best to shop around, because prices and quality can vary considerably. Before you order a gate ensure that you request sufficient keys for all affected residents. If there is more than one gate, it is advisable to request the same lock combination for each, so that residents need only one key.

Installation can either be carried out by yourself or an able neighbour. Alternatively contact a local builder. Provided every affected resident agrees, you can proceed. All of the information contained on this site is given as a guide and if you are in any doubt and would like further assistance, this can be made available upon request.
