Cemeteries and Crematoria Service

Crematoria

The nearest crematorium for the Bexley area is External LinkEltham Crematorium at Falconwood near the main A2 Rochester Way Relief Road. Although the Crematorium is governed by a joint committee from Bexley, Greenwich and Dartford Councils, the main administration is run by External LinkGreenwich Council. Bexleyheath Cemetery

Bexleyheath cemetery was opened in 1879 and is located at the end of Banks Lane off Broadway, Bexleyheath. It is not possible to purchase new graves for burials but there are gardens of remembrance for cremated remains. These are small gardens where up to two sets of cremated remains (ashes) can be interred in a numbered plot and a small vase or bronze plaque can be placed on the surface of the plot. It is also possible to purchase a lease for half size graves for the burial of cremated remains. The lease runs for sixty years with the option to renew the lease on expiry.

New Memorial Garden at Bexleyheath Cemetery

A new memorial garden opened in September 2001 in Bexleyheath Cemetery. This garden is for the burial of cremated remains only and comprises of either 2' x 2' plots for up to four sets of cremated remains. The lease for the plots will run for thirty years with the option to renew the lease on expiry. The plots are leased as part of a package requiring the purchase of a choice of memorials. Details are available from the Council's Cemetery Section.

Engraved plaques can be purchased and placed on the perimeter wall (leased for ten years) and flower vases can also be purchased through the Council and placed on the wall.

Erith Cemetery was opened in 1894 and is sited off Brook Street, Erith on both sides of the road. It is not possible to purchase new graves for burials but there are gardens of remembrance for the burial or cremated remains. These are small gardens where up to two sets of cremated remains can be interred and a small tablet or vase can be placed on the surface. It is also possible to purchase a lease for half size graves for the burial of cremated remains. The lease runs for sixty years with the option to renew the lease on expiry.

Hillview Cemetery

Hillview Cemetery was opened in 1995 and is sited off Wickham Street, Welling, at the base of Shooters Hill, and is surrounded by woodland. The main part of the cemetery is for full-size graves and there is a pretty landscaped columbaria memorial garden for the interment of cremated remains. The cemetery is interdenominational and has limitedHill View Cemetery Columbaria Memorial Gardenspace for Muslims.

Hillview Cemetery Columbaria Memorial Garden

The garden comprises a series of small pre-cast vaults sunk into the ground capable of taking two sets of cremated remains (ashes) in caskets or other containers of a pre-set size. The vault is sealed with a flat marble stone, recessed to take an inscribed memorial tablet. A granite vase is fixed to the vault and is included in the overall costs. The graves and vaults are leased for a period of thirty years with the option to renew the lease on expiry.

Sidcup Cemetery

Sidcup Cemetery was opened in 1912 and is sited off Foots Cray Lane, Sidcup.

A new section of Sidcup Cemetery opened in the Spring of 2003. Graves for full burials can be purchased in this new burial area to the far right hand side of the cemetery. The lease for these graves is 30 years with the option to extend the lease on expiry. There is, however, a requirement for a certain style of memorial and base in this section and further information can be obtained from the Council's cemetery office.

Sidcup Cemetery also offers gardens of remembrance for the burial of cremated remains. These are small gardens where up to two sets of cremated remains can be interred and a small tablet or vase can be placed on the surface. It is also possible to purchase a lease for half-size graves for the burial of cremated remains. The lease runs for sixty years with the option to renew the lease on expiry.

There are chapels at Erith Cemetery and Bexleyheath Cemetery.These can be used by prior arrangement for burial services and seat around 40 persons. There is a charge for using the chapel and this is payable at the time of booking a burial.

Bexleyheath Cemetery Upland Road Gate closes at 3pm from Monday to Friday (other gates in Bexleyheath will be closing early see signs on gates). Banks Lane gate is only gate that will stay open until the Cemetery closing time.

The cemeteries are open 7 days a week, 52 weeks of the year. There is an attendant on site at all times except Christmas Day and Boxing Day.
