Guarding of Skips on the Highway

Arrangement of Cones and Lamps

[Plan view of correct arrangement] A line of alternating cones and lamps should be placed from the outer corner of the skip, on the side of approach, to the point 2.5m ahead of the skip on the pavement. All four corners of the skip should have lamps fitted, and the skip should be no bigger than 5m (edge against kerb) by 2m (width protruding into carriageway).

Specification of Design

[Diagram showing the stripes which must be displayed down either side of the front of the skip. Full specifications for these are given below.]

Notes:

  1. The width of each half of the marking shall not be less than 140 millimetres nor more than 280 millimetres.
     
  2. The length of each half of the marking shall be not less than 350 millimetres nor more than 700 millimetres.
     
  3. The angle of each stripe shall be not less than 40 degrees to the vertical nor more than 50 degrees to the vertical.
     
  4. Each half of the marking shall have a minimum area of 980 square centimetres.
     
  5. The breadth of each stripe shall be not less than 133 millimetres nor more than 147 millimetres.
