Materials Accepted at the Reuse and Recycling Centres
Small Appliances
Plastic based electrical items, such as hairdryers, irons, vacuum cleaners,
stereos etc. The materials in each are separated for recycling. Please note this
facility is NOT for TVs and monitors, which should be placed in the dedicated
areas.
 Large Appliances
Metal based electrical items such as cookers, washing machines, microwaves
etc. The materials in each are separated for recycling. Please note this facility
is NOT for fridges,freezers, TVs and monitors, which should be placed in the
dedicated areas.
TVs & Monitors
Traditional TVs and monitors are separately collected and recycled
to prevent the release of harmful phosphorus in the cathode ray tube.
Modern
LCD and Plasma screens can be recycled in the Small Appliances Container as
they do not contain cathode ray tubes.
 Mobile Phones
These are sorted and distributed for reuse in the Developing Countries. For
your personal protection, please ensure all personal information is deleted
and the sim card is removed.
 Fridges
Ensure that these are empty of all food and drink these should be left upright,
with the door slightly open, in the designated area. Site staff will provide
assistance if required. The harmful CFCs from the insulation foam and coolant
are safely recovered and the rest of the material is recycled.
 Printer Cartridges
All printer cartridges can be deposited at either site. They are then
refilled and reused. Those that cannot be refilled are recycled.
Garden Waste
There are special containers for grass cuttings, leaves and small branches.
This is turned into compost which you can buy. Please continue to
use your brown bin to dispose of your food waste as we cannot process that here.
Glass
All bottles and glass jars. There are separate bins at all sites for clear,
brown and green glass. Please do not leave pyrex,
strengthened or plated glass.
Food and Drink Cans
Please wash them and squash them - this makes them easier to store and transport
and stops them smelling or attracting pests. The cans are sorted into different
types of material during the recycling process. Aluminium foil and empty aerosol
cans are also accepted in these banks.
Metals
Scrap metal can be deposited in the appropriate areas. It is then separated
into ferrous and non-ferrous and melted down for use again in new products.
Tools
Non-mechanical tools, such as saws, hammers etc are accepted at both Reuse
and Recycling Centres. These will be refurbished and distributed to Developing
Countries.
 Car Batteries
Acids and heavy metals from these batteries are safely recovered. Please
note that this is for vehicle batteries only and not for household batteries.
Household batteries can be accepted at selected large electrical retailers.
Used Engine Oil
This is collected, refined and used again in industry. Please ensure that
you deposit the container in the tanks provided. Please do not contaminate
with used vegetable oil.
 Wood & Timber
Timber Waste (NO MDF or CHIPBOARD): Both Re-use and Recycling Centres have
facilities for collecting timber waste including, offcuts, pallets and furniture.
This is turned into chipboard and used in the construction industry.
 Hardcore & Rubble
We accept breeze blocks, bricks, general hardcore, concrete and rubble. Please
ensure that the material is not bagged. This material
is cleaned and graded and used again in the construction industry.We do
not take tiles, wood (We have a separate area for wood) or asbestos (see below).
 Gas Bottles
Most gas bottles can be returned to the store where they were purchased.
When you are unable to do this, you can deposit any gas bottles/cylinders at
either of our Reuse and Recycling Centres. Please ask a member of staff for
assistance, who will take them to a designated area. Under no circumstances
put them in the general household containers.
 Textiles
Please use the containers for old clothes and pairs of shoes which are
then sent to Developing Countries or reprocessed. Please do not leave pillows,
duvets or carpets.
Shoes
Please use the containers for old pairs of shoes and trainers, which are
then sent to Developing Countries or reprocessed. The Reuse and Recycling Centre
at Foots Cray also has a separate wellie bank.
 Spectacles
All spectacles and reading glasses (even broken and damaged) are accepted.
These are sorted and distributed for reuse in Developing Countries. Please
note that sunglasses are not accepted.
 Books
Books/CDs/Videos/DVDs/Cassettes: All of these are accepted at both sites.
These are resold in charity shops to raise funds for worthy causes. Home recorded
videos, CDs, DVDs and cassettes along with pirated material are not accepted.
Plastic Bottles
These banks are for any coloured plastic bottles which hold liquids. Plastic
food containers and bags cannot be recycled.The plastic is turned into new
bottles, street furniture and fleece clothing.
Mixed Paper and Card
We will accept newspapers, cardboard, telephone directories, junk mail
and magazines.
Fluorescent Tubes
We accept all lightbulbs and fluorescent tubes.
Mercury from fluorescent tubes is safely recovered and all other materials
are recycled.

Furniture
Good quality furniture and working (or easily repairable) white goods such
as fridges, freezers, washing machines and cookers can now be reused. Simply
make the site staff aware that you have such items, those that are suitable
will be stored separately for our reuse partner Respond to collect
for distribution to disadvantaged persons.
Household Waste
Household waste can be placed in the designated areas. All household waste
goes to landfill sites, so please ensure that you separate your recyclable
waste.
