Kitchen and Garden Waste Collection
How to use your kitchen caddy

Put all of your kitchen scraps and food waste into the caddy |

Empty your caddy into the brown bin |

Leave your brown bin at the front of your property by 6:45am on collection
day |
All brown bins will be collected weekly in a separate vehicle
on your waste collection day. If you have more
material than you can fit in the bin, store it and put it in the brown bin
the week after. Alternatively we can accept up to 5 Bexley paper garden
waste sacks per week. These are available
from the Contact Centre; Bexley
Civic Offices; Crayford
Town Hall; Hillview; 2A
Hadlow Road; Wyncham
House; Bexley's Reuse and Recycling Centres and all
Council libraries at a cost of 20 pence each.
Should I still home compost?
YES. If you already home compost, then please continue to
do so. This is the best way for you to deal with your own garden and some kitchen
waste.

about home composting.
Why wasn’t my bin emptied?
There are various reasons why your brown bin has not been collected. The
most common reasons are as follows.
Contaminants
General waste
This bin is for compostable waste only. Continued misuse could
result in the removal of your brown bin.
Plastic bags
These cannot be processed even if they are labelled as biodegradeable. Excess
green waste can only be placed in Bexley Council paper garden waste sacks,
which can be purchased at libraries, Civic Offices and our Reuse and Recycling
Centres. (Limited to 5 bags per week.)
Other problems
Too heavy
Very heavy bins pose a health and safety risk to
the collection crews when both moving and loading them onto the vehicle.
Too compacted
Your compost is too compacted to tip into the
vehicle.
If your bin has not been emptied, we will not empty your brown bin until
the following week.
It is important that only the correct materials are put out for collection.
Please ensure that any offending items are taken out of the bin before your
next scheduled collection. The Council cannot empty the bin until all the wrong
materials are removed.
If your bin is too heavy or too compacted to empty, you need to resolve this
before your next scheduled collection.
To reduce any odours that may come from your kitchen waste, wrap it
in one or two sheets of newspaper or place in one of our caddy liners. Caddy
liners can be purchased from all libraries, the Civic Offices and our Reuse
and Recycling Centres at a cost of 5 pence each.
Why take part?
Much of our waste is sent to a hole in the ground and buried. This landfilling
can lead to pollution and wastes our natural resources. By using the brown bin
for compostable waste it can be made into compost for landscaping and gardening.
There are some simple steps you can take to reduce
odours/flies in your bins
- Wrap food waste in caddy liners/newspaper
- Keep the lids closed on your bin and caddy
- Wash your bins regularly, including any spillages on the surface
- Don't leave any food waste uncovered in the kitchen
- Using your brown bin for food waste deters animals from tearing open black
bags
- Try to store your bins out of direct sunlight
- Bexley Council does not provide a bin cleaning service, but there are various
private companies that do. Please refer to your local directories for further
details
