Improved Recycling Services - Frequently Asked Questions

Why are services changing?

Bexley Council has been the best recycling borough in London for 5 out of the last 6 years, recycling 40% of all household waste. There is still much more that we can do as up to 80% of our waste can be recycled. Higher taxes along with new fines for biodegradable waste that is sent to landfill could cost Bexley nearly £1.5m more per year by 2009 than it did in 2007. This is equivalent to a 2% increase in Council Tax.

Our changes will improve recycling collection services to avoid these unnecessary costs. To do this we need to recycle at least 50% of our household waste.

The picture below shows what residents recycle now and how much more could be recycled.

How will services change?

Our improved recycling service means that residents will have their recycling collected every week, and as there will be less non-recyclable waste (what's left), this will be collected fortnightly.

The table below shows how our improved recycling service will change.

Free Wheeled Bin

The Council will provide each household with a free waste wheeled bin for their non-recyclable waste. These will be delivered a couple of weeks before the scheme starts in each neighbourhood.

We will only collect non-recyclable waste that is placed at the front edge of the property in one wheeled bin with the lid shut.

How to present your waste

Please place your brown wheeled bin, recycling boxes and waste wheeled bin at the front edge of your property adjacent to the footpath for collection by 6:45am on your collection day.
