Housing Benefit

Who Can Apply For Help?

You can claim Housing benefit if you are the named person liable to pay the rent. If you are a joint tenant we can also help you with your share of the rent. In some circumstances you can be treated as the liable person, even though you are not the named person on the tenancy agreement.

You can apply for Council Tax Benefit if you are liable to pay the Council Tax.

Who is unable to apply for help?

You will not be able to get housing benefit or council tax benefit if:

  • You are a non-householder;
  • You have more than £16000 in capital (unless you are a pensioner in receipt of the Guarantee Credit element of the Pension Credit);
  • Your status in the UK excludes you from receiving public funds;
  • You are a full time student, unless:
    • you are a full time student who is also a lone parent, or
    • you are disabled, or
    • you are under 19 following a further (not higher) course, or
    • you are aged 60 or more.
