Housing Services in Bexley
Housing Strategy
Although the Council transferred its housing stock in February 1998, it
still retains strategic housing responsibilities to assess local needs and develop
plans to meet them, as well as providing services to those requiring advice on
their housing options. The Council therefore produces a housing strategy, in
consultation with tenants, residents and other partners that sets out a plan
for improving housing services and conditions.
Housing Strategy 2002-2006
The Housing Strategy:
- describes housing in Bexley within the national, regional and local context;
- outlines current and future housing markets and needs;
- describes housing objectives and priorities;
- reviews the process by which options are assessed and the resources available
to meet needs in the most effective way; and,
- provides a realistic and costed action plan, agreed with our partners, together
with performance measures
The Government Officer for London has assessed the Strategy as 'Fit
for Purpose'.
The 2004 Housing Annual Report outlines the changing policy context and
describes our performance against the objectives set out in the Housing Strategy
as well as a detailed action plan for 2004/05.

East London Housing Partnership with Bromley, Greenwich, Lewisham and Southwark
and includes the Housing Corporation, the Association of London Government (ALG)
and our housing association partners.
The scope and nature of SELHP's work can be seen in the SE London Housing
Strategy and its summary, and through the sub groups that are responsible for

Thames Gateway
Bexley is also a Thames Gateway Borough. The Government's Sustainable
Communities Plan identified the Thames Gateway as a major growth area for accommodating
more than 120,000 homes and more than 18,000 jobs by 2031. Although The Thames
Gateway initiative provides opportunity for major investment, in order to attract
this investment, Bexley will be expected to play its part in achieving housing
and employment growth. |
