National Poetry Day


Night Time Bed SceneNational Poetry Day, founded in 1994 by William Sieghart, Chairman of The Forward Poetry Trust and promoted by External Link:The Poetry Society, has become established as one of the highlights of the cultural calendar, drawing together the media, schools, libraries and arts centres in a celebration of the nation's poetic heritage.

National Poetry Day is supported by the BBC who put poetry in the spotlight with a wide variety of popular programming on television and radio, and continues to raise awareness of poetry and broaden its popular appeal.

National Poetry Day 2007:

Was on Thursday 4 October 2007, and the theme was "Dreams".

Was on Thursday 5 October 2006, and the theme was "Identity".

National Poetry Day 2004:

Was on Thursday 7 October 2004, and the theme was "Food".

National Poetry Day 2003:

Was on the theme of "Britain" was continued in Bexley's Libraries over Family Learning Weekend 10-12 October 2003.

National Poetry Day 2002:

Was on the theme "Celebration".
