Satellite technology in operation

Bexley Council’s Mobile Library Service has been extended with a new vehicle, which has been designed specifically for use by children. It provides children from primary schools with the latest in children’s books, audio books and computers.

The mobile library has two computers which, supported by satellite technology, can be used by children to search the Internet for their favourite subjects.

In addition to computer technology, the mobile library is fully accessible with facilities including a hearing loop system, displays of interesting books and a soft cushioned bench where children and their carers can relax and enjoy reading together. An air conditioning system makes using the mobile library a comfortable experience, whilst a large sun canopy attached to the side of the vehicle provides protection against the sun for outdoor storytime sessions.

Storytimes are enjoyed by all

During the visits to schools, children are encouraged to make full use of all that the mobile library offers. The children’s mobile library staff aim to improve literacy and encourage reading for enjoyment by offering advice to children borrowing books and stories on CD’s. Staff complement this aim by also providing book talks and story times. Creative writing is also encouraged, with links to national events such as the Summer Reading Challenge and National Poetry Day.

The dedicated team of 3 staff can also help to support children’s topic work through links with the Local Studies and Archive Centre, who can provide talks on a variety of curriculum subjects such as the Victorians and the history of Bexley Borough. The mobile library can also be seen at shows, festivals and other events around Bexley.
