Parking Penalties Set to Change London-wide
In line with the rest of London, Bexley's motorists will face a two-tier parking penalty system from 1 July, 2007. The new rules will provide a fairer system of charges, depending on the type of offence and where it takes place.
From July, the actual penalty charge issued will depend on the category of contravention, which have been split into "More Serious" and "Less Serious". The "More Serious" contraventions, such as parking on yellow lines, on the pavement, on bus stops, on zig zag markings etc, will be issued at a higher charge than the "Less Serious", such as over-staying on time purchased at a meter, parking outside of a marked bay etc.
The new charges represent a fairer deal for motorists and have been introduced after extensive public consultation. They follow a decision by London Council's Transport and Environment Committee, the Mayor of London and the Secretary of State for Transport.
London Councils and TfL carried out the consultation exercise last year with the public, motoring organisations, the police, disabled drivers associations and other interested parties to identify whether or not the current system of charges for parking penalties could be made fairer.
London is the first city in the country to introduce a two-tier parking penalty system. More information and a complete listing of the new classifications can be found on www.londoncouncils.gov.uk
In the Borough of Bexley it will mean that in Bexleyheath town centre "More Serious" contraventions will attract a charge of £120, while "Less Serious" ones will cost £80. Elsewhere in Bexley (and in Council pay and display car parks) the charges will be £100 & £60 respectively. All penalties will be reduced by 50 per cent if paid within 14 days of the date of issue of the Notice.
