Nature Conservation

Throughout the Borough there are many areas of open space which have significant ecological value. They require special management and protection and there are specific policies within the Council's Unitary Development Plan in this regard. Many of these areas are accessible to the public and offer a valuable recreational resource. The Council is always looking to enhance such areas, whether they be in public or private ownership, and runs a number of environmental improvement schemes each year in partnership with local communities and businesses.

The Council has significant in house expertise which it can call on with regard to nature conservation and for more information on these services please see the Parks website. However, many projects are carried out in cooperation with other organisations such as the External Link Groundwork Trust, External Link Green Chain and the North West Kent Countryside Project. For more information please contact Ben Thomas on 020 8308 7788.

The Council also runs a scheme which enables local schools to provide an ecology area within their grounds for educational purposes. You can download the PDF Documentappropriate form and guidance notes (205KB, PDF file).
