Sustainable Design and Construction Guide
(Draft for Consultation)

This consultation has now closed and these pages are provided for information only.

Sustainable Design and Construction Guide We all want to improve the quality of life in Bexley. The Council wants to work in cooperation with the developers of new buildings to achieve the highest possible standards of sustainable design and construction. This means creating developments that minimise their environmental impact, are more cost-effective to run, more secure, and provide healthy living conditions, at the same time as respecting Bexley’s rich heritage, its natural and built environment and its distinctiveness.

The Council has prepared Draft Guidance on Sustainable Design and Construction to highlight the important contribution people involved in designing and constructing new developments can make to improving the quality of life in Bexley. We are seeking comments on the draft Guidance to help us improve the quality of the final version.

The draft Guidance, together with a Sustainability Appraisal Report and other associated documents, is available here:

Paper copies of the draft Sustainable Design & Construction Guide and Sustainability Appraisal Report are available on request: phone 020 8308 7869. The Appendices to the Sustainability Appraisal Report are only available on CD, upon request.
Copies of the full report are also available to view at:

  • The Contact Centre at the Civic Offices, Broadway, Bexleyheath, Monday to Friday, 9.00am to 5.00pm
  • Wyncham House, 207 Longlands Road, Sidcup, Monday to Friday, 9.00am to 5.00pm
  • Bexley's Libraries. Please check opening hours here.

The Council will expect everyone to follow the guidelines set out in this document when undertaking new development in Bexley. Careful consideration of design and specification at an early stage can provide significant savings compared with an ad hoc approach, and people proposing development should ensure that they are familiar with the Council’s expectations for sustainable design and construction prior to commencing the design work.

The Sustainable Design and Construction Guide is a Supplementary Planning Document within Bexley’s Local Development Framework. It has been prepared to supplement the policies and proposals of the adopted Bexley Unitary Development Plan and the Mayor of London’s spatial strategy, The London Plan, which together form the development plan for the area. It will be a material consideration when the Council considers planning applications. The document has been prepared in line with the legislative requirements of the Planning and Compulsory Purchase Act 2004 and associated regulations and guidance.
