Think! Food Hygiene Training

Food hygiene training is an essential requirement for all food businesses. The Food Safety Team regularly runs the Chartered Institute of Environmental Health's Foundation Certificate in Food Hygiene course at the Civic Offices. Go to our PDF file Food Hygiene Training leaflet (PDF file, 59KB) for more information and a booking form. To enquire about the availability of places, please contact us.

Occasionally we are able to organise this course in other languages such as Bengali, Turkish and Chinese. The relevant food businesses are contacted directly but if you are interested, please contact us for details about these courses.

We also run the following CIEH accredited courses where there is sufficient demand:

  • Intermediate Certificate in Food Safety
  • Advanced Certificate in Food Safety
  • Refresher Training

Courses can also be organized and run at your premises if you can provide suitable facilities on site.

Details of the different courses are given below:

CIEH Foundation Certificate in Food Hygiene

The CIEH Foundation Certificate in Food Hygiene is a first level qualification to provide fundamental food hygiene knowledge for all food handlers. Candidates are assessed by a test of 30 multiple-choice questions. A full colour course book is provided for candidates to keep which supports the teaching.

Course dates: various one-day courses held approximately every two months. See table below for exact dates and costs

CIEH Intermediate Certificate in Food Safety

This qualification is designed for supervisors, team leaders and anyone who wants to make a career in food and needs a broader understanding of food safety. It will enable candidates to play an active role in auditing, the development of safety standards, and providing support for hazard analysis and training programmes in the workplace.

This course is run over 4 days. See table below for exact dates and costs.

CIEH Advanced Certificate in Food Safety

This qualification is ideal for those working in medium to large businesses that have responsibility for the management of food safety. It is also an appropriate technical qualification for those who want to apply to deliver CIEH training. This course will run over 6 days. The "Practical Teaching Certificate" course may be offered alongside the Advanced Certificate in Food Safety so that you will be able to train others to Foundation level.

It is recommended, but not compulsory, that the Intermediate Certificate in Food Safety course is taken prior to starting the Advanced Certificate in Food Safety course.

CIEH Foundation Certificate in Food Hygiene Update

To ensure continuing high standards refresher training is recommended every three years. This is open to holders of CIEH Foundation Certificate in Food Hygiene, or equivalent, gained within the last five years. The course is a minimum of three hours.
