Squirrels

Frequently Asked Questions

A SquirrelThe most serious damage in urban areas arises where squirrels enter the roof spaces in houses and other buildings by climbing walls or jumping from nearby trees.

Why do I need to keep squirrels out of the loft?

When squirrels enter the loft space they are not only noisy but can also cause structural damage by tearing up loft insulation for bedding and chewing timbers and pipe work. They also pose a fire hazard by stripping insulation from electrical wiring. If they drown in uncovered water storage tanks they will contaminate the water supply.

How do they get in?

A hole need only be as big as a squirrel’s head to allow access. If they have been seen entering the property, their access points will be known, but otherwise a piece of newspaper stuffed securely into a suspected access hole can be easily removed by a squirrel and will show that a hole is in use.

How do I stop them?

The RSPCA advise the use of strong wire netting with a mesh size no larger that 25mm to block any access holes, plus repair to any slipped slates, rotten soffits or missing bricks.

What if they are already in the loft?

If the squirrels have already gained entry, it is essential to ensure that there are none remaining in the loft when access is blocked. Not only is it cruel to trap them (and illegal to cause suffering to a captive animal), they may do additional damage in their attempt to escape or if a mother is protecting her young. The decomposition of any squirrels that die may also cause odour and insect infestation.

Are squirrels dangerous?

Squirrels can attack when frightened, or defending their young. Take care and make noise to scare them away before entering the loft.

Can I kill them myself?

Lethal control of squirrels is permitted but should only be carried out by qualified professional pest control officers. The use of poisons is strictly regulated for use by professionals only and should never be undertaken by a member of the public.
