Wasps

Frequently Asked Questions

Wasps are social insects that form colonies inside nests specially constructed in soil banks, roof spaces and in cavities in trees and walls. They are frequently associated with domestic housing.

Wasp

Are wasps dangerous?

Wasps can inflict a painful sting but in most cases the sting is no more than unpleasant, although multiple stings and those in sensitive places such as the head or inside the mouth may be more serious. In rare cases a single sting may induce anaphylactic shock (an extreme reaction to the toxins in the wasp venom), which, without rapid medical attention, can result in death within a short time. This only occurs in a very few hypersensitive individuals after sensitisation by a previous sting or stings. It is important to avoid being stung if possible and to be aware if the reaction to stings becomes more acute. Medical advice should be sought if increasing sensitisation occurs.
