Emissions
Bexley's air quality is measured continuously at four
background sites (away from major roads), at a roadside
and in a busy industrial location. Information on local
air quality can be found on our air
quality pages.
Using monitoring data and the results of computerised
pollution predictions, the Council has reviewed and assessed
air quality right across the Borough. This work has shown
that in the vast majority of locations, local air quality
satisfies statutory Government objectives.
In places where air quality still gives cause for concern,
it is found that road traffic is the main cause of air
pollution. This picture is repeated right across the country.
Although over 25% of motor cars are now fitted with catalytic
converters to reduce exhaust emissions, there is evidence
that the continued growth in the number of vehicles on
the roads, is limiting the benefits from the improved
emissions technology.
Alternative fuels such as liquid petroleum gas, compressed
natural gas, electricity and hydrogen may all in due course
help to defeat air pollution. Until that time, more will
need to be done by us all if we are to continue enjoying
the benefits of cars without impacting on health. Here
are a few ways to help:
-
Ensure that if required your vehicle has a valid
MOT test certificate.
-
Maintain a steady driving pattern. Try not to accelerate
or break sharply particularly in between traffic calming
measures, speed humps, etc.
-
Avoid letting your car tick over unnecessarily. Turn
the engine off where possible.
-
Share cars and use public transport wherever possible.
Your work place may have a (green) transport plan,
if not try and encourage one being established.
-
Avoid using the car for short walkable journeys
-
Get involved in the Council's local campaigns as
part of "Don't choke Britain" which takes
place in June each year.
