Health & Safety At Work
Topical Information
Much of the information on the Health & Safety web pages is of fairly constant interest. However this section contains information on topical issues that may be of interest for limited periods, and is therefore subject to change more frequently.
Moving Goods Safely
Moving Goods Safely is a London-wide initiative in 2005/06 with the aim of a national roll out in 2006/07. It involves the Health and Safety Executive and the 33 London Local Authorities working together to reduce injuries and ill-health arising from the movement of goods across the whole supply chain - from manufacture to retail sales. The project includes coordinated inspections of multi-site and peripatetic organisations by mixed Local Authority and HSE teams and focuses on workplace transport, musculoskeletal disorders and slips risks.
For further information on the project visit the moving goods safely web page www.hse.gov.uk/movinggoods.
Health and Safety at Work - Priority Topics
Over the coming year health and safety inspectors will concentrate on looking at five 'priority topics' when they visit workplaces. These are the five things that are most likely to kill, injure and make people ill at work.
The five priorities are:
- Slips and trips: the most common cause of
non-fatal injury is a slip, trip or fall on the same level. They account for
over a third of all reportable injuries. You can find out more about how to control
slip and trip risks here
www.hse.gov.uk/slips.
- Musculoskeletal Disorders (MSD's): this includes
manual handling and repetitive work such as data input. Approximately 1.1 million
people in Britain suffer from work related MSD's, around half related to back
problems. An estimated 12.3 million working days are lost each year. Find out
more about how to control MSD's here
www.hse.gov.uk/msd.
- Workplace transport: about 70 people a year
are killed in workplace transport accidents. There are around 1500 major injuries.
Workplace transport is the second biggest cause of fatal accidents. Find out
more about how to control workplace transport risks here
www.hse.gov.uk/workplacetransport.
- Falls from height: around 75 people are killed
and 5000 seriously injured each year by a fall from height. This is the most
common cause of fatal accidents and the second most common cause of major injuries.
Falling from ladders is the main cause of injury. Find out more about how to
control the risks here
www.hse.gov.uk/falls.
- Stress: the most recent survey in 2001/2002
revealed that 13.5 million working days are lost each year due to work related
stress. New management standards have recently been published by the HSE and
are freely available. Find out more here
www.hse.gov.uk/stress.
The legal responsibility for controlling risks in the workplace rests with the employer or self employed person. Look at each of the priority topics to make sure that you are meeting your legal duties before the inspector calls. Take action now, before someone has an accident or becomes ill.
