Consumer Advice
When choosing a tradesman it is always important to consider the
following:
-
Avoid quick decisions, particularly in the case of doorstep salesmen who ‘cold
call’.
-
If possible use a trader who has been recommended by people you trust.
-
Try
to obtain at least three estimates and compare them.
-
If the tradesman claims to belong to a trade association, contact the association
to check that their membership is up to date and whether there is an arbitration scheme
to deal with any problems which may arise.
-
Obtain a clear, detailed and written quotation stating what is to be done and the
cost. Estimates should only be accepted in exceptional circumstances. If you have
nothing in writing it may be difficult to make a claim.
-
Include a completion date in your agreement.
-
Make sure that the paperwork contains the name and address of the tradesman, not
just a telephone number.
-
In large contracts it is normal to pay for work in stages. Be sure you are happy
with each stage before payment is made.
-
Beware of being asked to pay too much up front.
- Make sure the work complies with regulatory controls that may apply such as the
Building or Planning Control (extensions and structural works/alterations can fall
within this category). Note - Gas and window installations are also controlled.
