Being Married in a Church or Religious Building

The Church of England does not come under the authority of the Civil Registration Service, so if you wish to be married in an Anglican Church then you must contact the vicar. To marry in the Church of England, one of you must either worship regularly at that church or be resident within the parish boundaries of the church. Marriages are usually conducted after the reading of Banns which takes three weeks.

Marriage Register

If you are being married in any religious building other than the Church of England, then it is necessary for you to give your Notice of Marriage to the Superintendent Registrar in the district where each of you is currently living. You can only be married in a church in a different district if one of you regularly worships there, or if there is no building of your religion or denomination registered for marriage in the district where you live. Please note that not all buildings used for religious worship are registered for marriages - telephone the local register office who will be happy to check the lists that they hold. Please telephone us on 020 8308 7515 for advice and the correct information on giving your notice of marriage.

If you are the minister, proprietor or trustee of a building that you would like to have registered for worship and / or the solemnization of marriage, information and application forms are available at www.gro.gov.uk/gro/content/marriages Please contact the Superintendent Registar to discuss your application, which must be sent via your local register office.
