Registering a Birth
Births which occur in the Bexley Borough should be registered at the Register Office, Manor House, The Green, Sidcup. Registrations are made on appointment - please telephone us on 020 8308 7515 to make an appointment and for details of our opening hours. If the birth occurred elsewhere, but you need to attend this office to register, please telephone us for advice. Please note that you have a legal duty to register the birth within 42 days.

When you attend the office, the registrar will see you privately and ask for the following information:
For Baby:
- the date and place of birth, and if the birth is twins or triplets etc. the time that each baby was born
- whether baby is a boy or a girl
- the full name and surname that baby will be known by - please ensure that you have decided upon the spelling of all the names that you will give baby
For Baby's Mother:
- Her full name and surname, together with any surnames used before marriage if applicable
- Her date and place of birth
- Her usual address at the time of the birth, and occupation (if applicable)
- If married to baby's father, the date of the marriage and the number of children by her present or any former husband
For Baby's Father:
- His full name and surname
- His date and place of birth
- His occupation
Note:
If baby's parents are married to one another, then one parent may attend alone to register. If baby's parents are not married, then unless the father attends together with baby's mother to register baby his details cannot be entered - please telephone for further advice and information.
Generally, a register entry cannot be changed once it is signed EXCEPT in certain circumstances e.g. when baby's parents marry after the birth or if baby is baptised. Please contact us for advice if you wish to discuss your circumstances.
The registrar will provide you with a short certificate of birth free of charge - all other certificates are available on payment of a fee.
