Registrations are made on appointment: if the death occurred at Queen Mary's Hospital, the appointment will be made on your behalf. If the Coroner is involved in an enquiry into the death, then the Coroner's Officer will advise you when the appointment to register may be made.

You will need to give the registrar the medical certificate of death, provided to you by the hospital or the deceased's own doctor as appropriate.

You will need to tell the registrar the following information about the person who has died:

  • The full name and surname that they were known by
  • For a man or woman who was married or widowed, the full name and occupation of their spouse or late spouse (together with the name used before marriage for a married woman or widow)
  • For a civil partner or surviving civil partner, the name and occupation of their civil partner or surviving civil partner
  • The date and place of the deceased's birth
  • The last occupation and usual address
  • The registrar will also ask about any pensions or allowances that the deceased was receiving from Government Funds

When you come to the office, the registrar will see you privately and enter the details of the death into the register. You will be asked to check the details carefully before you sign it as being a correct record - please note that it is very difficult to change an entry in the register once it is signed.

The Registration of a death is free of charge. The registrar will provide you free of charge with certificates for Burial or Cremation, and a certificate for Social Security purposes. All other copies of certificates are provided on payment of a fee but you will need copies to obtain probate or otherwise finalise the deceased's estate. The registrar will be able to provide you with a copy of the Department for Work and Pensions leaflet D49 "What to do after a death" but for other information on pensions and allowances please visit www.dwp.gov.uk and for information on how to obtain probate please visit www.theprobateservice.gov.uk.

Please telephone us on 020 8308 7515 to make an appointment and for details of our opening hours.

For information on cemeteries and crematoria in Bexley, including historical information on burials and cremations please see the Cemeteries and Crematoria page.
