Registering a Stillbirth
or Neo Natal Death

Stillbirths or neo natal deaths that occur in the London Borough of Bexley should be registered at the Register Office, Manor House, Sidcup. Registrations are made on appointment, which may be made on your behalf by the Hospital / Maternity Bereavement Officer. Please contact the office on 020 8308 7515 if you would prefer to make your own appointment or if you wish to have advice or ask any questions prior to your visit.

If the birth and / or death occurred at another hospital, but you would prefer to attend this office to register please telephone us for advice. This procedure is called 'registration by declaration' and could mean that the issue of legal documents that would allow a funeral to take place may be delayed. As the procedure involves the electronic transfer of information, you would not be able to sign the register - you may wish to consider whether this is important for you.

The registration of a stillbirth or neo natal death is free of charge. The registrar will provide you with a certificate for the burial or cremation of your child(ren) free of charge, but all other certificates are provided on payment of a fee. The registrar will be able to provide you with a copy of the Department for Work and Pensions leaflet D49 "What to do after a death" but for other information and links to support groups please visit [External link]www.directgov.uk.
