What is a school Gifted and Talented co-ordinator?
A Gifted and Talented Co-ordinator is the member of staff in
a school who is responsible for the Gifted and Talented Programme.
How are the children identified as Gifted and Talented?
Different schools have different methods to identify children.
These can include test results, and/or teacher assessments and observations, as
well as other approaches.
What happens when my child is on the Gifted and Talented programme?
It depends on the child and on the school. In some schools children
will be taught in mixed ability classes and in others in ability groups.
Teachers are encouraged to look at how pupils are challenged during their normal
lessons and to plan the work to take full account of differing needs and abilities.
Children may be also be involved in extra curricular activities such as after
school clubs or holiday schemes.
How can I/we help my child while on the programme?
There are many ways that parents can support their children,
for example by encouraging them to join a library, start a collection, take up
a hobby, join a sports club, learn to play an instrument and encouraging independent
research. Parents can support homework activities and talk about what their children
have learnt in school and their interests.
Parents may wish to join The National Association for Gifted and Talented
Children ( www.nagcbritian.org.uk),
which will give information and support.
What happens if my child moves school?
When a child changes school they will be considered in the context
of other children in the year group and a decision will be made whether or not
they are chosen. Children do not automatically go onto the school's Gifted and
Talented register even though their abilities and needs continue. It is strongly
recommended that parents discuss this with any potential new school.
Who can I contact for further information or if I have concerns regarding
