Frequently Asked Questions
What is a Learning Support Unit (LSU)?
The LSU aims to help children stay in school and carry on learning,
whilst at the same time helping them develop positive relationships with adults
and other children.
What do they do?
They help children practise the skills and behaviour that will
help them concentrate in the classroom. They also build positive relationships
with both children and their parents/carers.
Why has my child been picked to go onto the programme?
The school will have identified that your child might make better
progresswith help from the LSU.
I want my child to go onto the LSU; can I request that he/she goes onto it?
How do I do this?
You should speak to your child's class teacher or form
tutor. LSU's can only take a limited number of children and so each school
decides the order of priority.
What happens when my child is in the LSU?
When your child is in the LSU, s/he will continue learning.
At the same time, s/he, will work on the behavioural or social difficulties that
are preventing him/her from taking part in the normal school timetable.
How will this benefit my child?
Time with the LSU should help your child to be better able to
handle the normal classroom environment and the social side of school life.
How can I/we help my child while on the programme?
The staff in the LSU will be very pleased to work with you, and
will be very happy to talk to you about how you can help.
When will my child meet/visit the LSU?
Some children visit the LSU full-time for a number of days or
weeks, whereas others attend for only some of their lessons. It all depends on
what is best for your child.
Will they have to give up break times to meet/visit the LSU?
No, they won't have to give up break times to work in
the LSU.
Will my child miss classes by going into the LSU?

have lessons, but these will take place in the LSU.
What happens when my child finishes with the LSU?
As your child finishes his/her time with the LSU, s/he will be
helped to settle into the normal school timetable again.
Do I/we get a record of what my child is doing and any improvement while on
the LSU programme?
Yes. The LSU will keep you fully involved and up to date.
Who else has access to this information?
The work with the LSU will become part of the child's normal
