Improving the quality of teaching and learning, and helping
children approach change with confidence.
The 4th part of the project aims to improve the quality of teaching
and learning so that more young people experience success. In this way, it is
expected that children will develop greater confidence and so be able to handle
change more easily. This is particularly important for helping children move from
primary to secondary school.
There is lots of evidence to show that many children find it very difficult
to settle into a new school. If you think of the differences between a primary
and a secondary school, it is easy to see why. Secondary schools are much bigger
than primary schools. Children go from having one teacher in the primary school
for all subjects (a teacher they get to know very well), to up to 12 different
teachers (one for each subject in the secondary school). In secondary schools
children often change rooms at every lesson, whereas in the primary school they
stay in one room for most of their lessons. In a very big school, there are often
split lunches, and this too can be very confusing for children who are not prepared
for such changes. It is not surprising that so many children find the move to
secondary school very daunting.
This part of the project, then, concentrates on helping children to develop
their confidence through success, so they are better able to cope with change.
There will be lots of interesting activities where teachers and children from
different schools work together, and where children will develop their language
and speaking skills and broaden their experience of the world.
If you have any concerns about teaching and learning or about your child handling
a change of school, or if you want more information about this part of the project,
then please contact the head teacher of your child's school.
