Schools in Bexley

An Overview of Schools in the Borough

General Information on Schools

There are 82 publicly maintained schools in Bexley. Sixty are primary schools, catering for children aged 4 to 11, including five pairs of infant (4-7) and junior (7-11) schools. Forty three of the primary schools have a nursery class attached. A booklet describing nursery admissions arrangements is available from the Admissions Team (020 8836 8448), or by clicking through the link above.

St Catherines school groundsForty two primary schools are community schools and two are voluntary controlled. Admission to these schools is the responsibility of Bexley Council. Parents whose children were born between 1st September 2000 and 31st August 2001 (inclusive), should apply for a primary school place by 28th February 2005 for their child to begin in September 2005 or January 2006. A booklet describing primary school admissions arrangements is available from local schools or from the Admissions Team (020 8836 8448), or by clicking through the link above.

Thirteen primary schools are voluntary aided and have a religious character. They arrange their own admissions. Each school can provide details of its own arrangements. One infant and one junior school are foundation schools. The Council administers the admission arrangements for the infant school, details of which are in the Council's booklet/guidelines. One primary school is part of the city academy, which now offers education from age 4 to age 19.

Bexley Council operates selective education at secondary school level, with four grammar schools (two mixed, one boys and one girls) and places in a selective stream at a (mixed) bilateral school. Three voluntary aided comprehensive schools admit pupils across the ability range. Details of their admission arrangements can be obtained from the schools themselves. There are six community all-ability schools, one foundation all-ability school and a city academy.

Applications for admission in September 2005 to all secondary schools should be made on the Common Application Form available from the Council where you live. A booklet setting out Bexley's secondary school admission arrangements is available from the Admissions Team (020 8836 8427), or by clicking through the link above.

School assemblyMost schools in Bexley have a 6th form and there is one school, St Luke's Catholic Sixth Form College, which is for 6th form pupils only. A separate booklet giving details of 6th form courses available, showing entry qualifications and giving details of how to apply for schools in Bexley will be available for Year 11 students from their secondary school or from the Admissions Team (020 8836 8448), or by clicking through the link above.

A further booklet (entitled 'Course Planner') giving details of courses available in schools and colleges in Bexley and some neighbouring areas is available from Connexions (telephone 020 8298 1551).

Bexley also maintains five special schools and two Pupil Referral Units. The special schools cater for pupils of a variety of ages, with a variety of difficulties, including moderate to severe learning difficulties, profound and multiple learning difficulties, emotional and behavioural difficulties, and ASD (Autism Spectrum Disorder). Admission to these schools is by a Statement of Special Educational Needs.

The Pupil Referral Units cater for children who are 'out of school' due to permanent exclusion, are at risk of exclusion, or are refusing to attend school.
