Parent Governor Representatives
Contact Bexley's parent governor representatives
Local authorities must provide places, with speaking and voting rights, for parent governor representatives on their main committees and sub committees dealing with education matters. Parent governor representatives are parent governors elected by other parent governors to provide a voice for all parents in their area in local decision making.

Parent Governor Representative, and Liz Blaylock has been re-elected as Primary
Parent Governor Representative.

Representatives are now working on the Bexley Education and Youth Scrutiny Committee and Sub Groups, the Bexley Schools Forum and the Bexley Schools' Admissions Forum and are liaising with local parent governors and parents.
The role of the parent governor representatives
- Speaking for parents and pupils on education matters at local authority meetings;
- Voting in key decisions;
- Keeping in touch with general views of parents; and
- Acting as a sounding board for the local authority when it wants to get a feel for whether parents are likely to welcome or reject a particular proposal

Pupil Participation and Student Voice
Wednesday 6 December
Liz Blaylock PGR for with the assistance of the Bexley Clerkship, organised
a successful meeting on another theme from the ECM agenda, which was well received
by parent governors.
Bev Mills, participation and Quality Projects Officer and Jackie Estaugh,
Personal, Social, Citizenship and Health Education Projects Officer (PSCHE) gave
an informative presentation on Pupil Participation and Student Voice.
Parent Governors were informed about the innovative work that is taking place
in Bexley to encourage participation from children and young people in the decision-making
processes that affect their everyday schooling which they find are relevant to
them.
Participation is one of the key outcomes of the Every Child Matters’ Framework.
Inspection Criteria Point 3 of making A Positive Contribution states, “Children
and young people are encouraged to participate in decision making and support
the community.
Governors were informed about a range of events in Bexley where children
and young people had participated in over the last year including:
- Right to Reply Conference – April 2006
- Consultation on outdoor play – Summer 2006
- School Nurse Consultation leaflet – August 2006
- National Play Day - August
- Unite Festival – September 2006
- Unity within Diversity Conference – November 2006
- Speaker Box – Celebrating International Children’s Day – November
- Safeguarding Consultation – November 2006
Governors were advised of the forcoming events:
- Children’s Trust Participation Conference Friday 19 th January 2007, Boat House, Danson Park
- Children’s Summit Tuesday 30 th January 2007, Council Chambers, Bexleyheath
- Article 12 Secondary Schools Friday 16 th March 2007
- Article 12 Primary Schools TBA (July 2007)
Governors shared examples of Pupil Participation in their schools, which
could be considered best practice and included:
- Active School Councils
- Governor Representative on a School Council
- Consultations with children and young people about healthy food at lunch
and break times, school uniform, playground equipment and buddy scheme at play
times
- Possibility of inviting representatives from the school councils to governors
meeting for appropriate items
Governors were also informed about available grants and funding to enhance
the participation of children and young people in schools.
