Special Schools
Schools for pupils with special educational needs
Bexley Council maintains five special schools (see List of Schools). Pupils aged 2 - 11 who have severe or profound and multiple
learning difficulties (SLD, PMLD) attend one of these schools while pupils
aged 11-19 attend the secondary school for pupils with SLD and PMLD. Two
schools, one primary and one secondary, are designated for pupils with
emotional and behavioural difficulties (EBD). The fifth school supports
pupils with moderate learning difficulties and also provides places for
children with autism spectrum disorder (ASD). Admission to these schools
is by a Statement of Special Educational Needs that names the school. All
these schools, except the secondary school for pupils with EBD, have some
provision for pupils with ASD.
Special Provision
Special provision made at designated primary and secondary schools includes
provision for hearing impaired pupils, visually impaired pupils, pupils
with ASD, physical disabilities, speech and communication difficulties
and general learning difficulties. In one secondary school there is provision
for pupils with physical disabilities and in another provision for pupils
with mild emotional behavioural difficulties.
Children out of School
The needs of children out of school are met through Pupil Referral Units
(PRU), one primary and one secondary (see list of schools).
The primary PRU offers full time provision for permanently excluded children
and part time intervention for some children at risk of exclusion. The
secondary PRU provides support for excluded children and for those chronic
non attenders and others who refuse to attend school. Individual tuition
for pupils with medical needs is managed separately.
