Sensory Support Service
The Sensory Support Service provides services for people who are
deaf or hard of hearing, those who have visual impairment and those who are Deafblind.
A range of services and support is provided.
Who can access the service?
Anyone who lives in the Borough of Bexley who is, or cares for,
someone who is deaf, hard of hearing or visually impaired. Also agencies and other
professionals requiring advice and information or joint working.
What services are provided?
The Deaf and Hard of Hearing Service provides social
work support, advice and information, guidance and supply of some equipment. In
addition, a sign language interpreter can assist with appointments with health
agencies, social services and other Council services.
Bexley Deaf Centre provides demonstrations of equipment
such as television, listening aids and loud doorbells. Courses on sign language
and deaf awareness are available. Various Groups including a Tinnitus group, meet
at the Centre.
The Visual Impairment Service includes rehabilitation
officers who are specifically trained to support Blind and Partially Sighted people.
The service focuses on enabling people with a visual impairment to be fully active
and independent in the community by providing training advice and assistance to
access support. Services to people that are Deafblind are also undertaken by the
team.
Dengate Resource Centre provides courses to develop
practical skills and independence, including typing, computer skills, cooking,
gardening, reading and writing, mobility and independent living skills. Support
is also given to people who are Deafblind.
What charges apply?
Most services are provided free but there may be some charges
for equipment or courses - details will be provided in advance.
How do I access services?
Referrals to the team are usually made by telephone, in
person, by e-mail, fax, Typetalk or Minicom.
