London Youth Games 2007
This year the London Youth Games celebrated its 30th Birthday. The event saw
over 25,000 young Londoners compete in 46 separate sports events over 5 weeks
that culminated in a two-day festival of sport at Crystal Palace National Sports
Centre on the 30 June and 1 July.
Over 500 of the borough’s top athletes represented Bexley at this year’s
London Youth Games and Mini Games helping the borough to fourth place out of
the 33 London Boroughs. Bexley entered a fantastic 42 individual sports teams
with many achieving medal placings as well as top individual performances.
In entering 42 events Bexley fielded the second highest number of teams from
any individual borough.
One of the highlights of this year’s event was a visit by 4 times Olympic
Gold Medal winner Sir Matthew Pinsent who was there to help promote the London
2012 Road Show
Bexley’s Gold Medal Winners
The Girls Artistic Gymnastic Team (Sophie Brundish, Lily Peck, Jenna Engelhardt
from Europa Gym Club, and Charlotte Wolfenden, Francesca Bizzel, Lucy Burrows
from Blackfen Gym Club)
- The Weightlifting Team picked up a second gold in just two years with youngsters
from Europa Weightlifting Club (Peter Barnett, Nathan New and Sadie). Peter
also set the day’s record for the greatest weight lifted.
- The Girls Athletics Team for people with Disabilities, made up of pupils
from Woodside School, Belvedere and Marlborough School, Sidcup.
Silver Medal Winners
The Bexley Tennis Team (Lewis Burton, Dominic Wilcock, Adam Smith, Lauren
Townrow and Katie Sewell) who faced a tough Sutton team in the final.
- The Boys Football Team, coached and supported by Charlton Athletic Community
Scheme
- The Girls Swimming team secured overall team silver with many swimmers
collecting individual medals for their events.
- The Aquathlon team who take part in a 250metre swim followed by a 2km run
also collected overall silver.
Bronze Medal Winners
- The Diving Team claimed bronze medal this year as well as some individual
medal winning performances. The team were made up of Stephen Appleby, Danny
Appleby, Jessica Williams and Emily Thompson.
Building on the success of the dance performances last year, boroughs were
again invited to nominate dance groups to represent them at the finals weekend
Bexley were done proud by both Dynamiks and Streetwise over the weekend.
