The all new Sidcup Leisure Centre
The all new Sidcup Leisure Centre

The final piece of Bexley’s jigsaw has finally slotted into place as the all-new state-of-the-art Sidcup Leisure Centre opened to the public on Saturday 29 March.

The Centre was completed on budget and its opening was followed by the closure of the nearby Lamorbey Baths.

Key facilities at the centre include:

  • 25-metre, six-lane swimming pool
  • Learner pool with bubble pools and jets
  • Four-court sports hall with provision for badminton, basketball, gymnastics, football and cricket
  • Fitness and changing facilities
  • Fitness studio with 80 stations
  • Dance studio
  • Crèche
  • Café

Sidcup Leisure Centre has been built on part of the site of Chislehurst & Sidcup Grammar School. Students at the school will share the use of the new facilities, particularly the sports hall, during term time.

As well as having been built to provide excellent access for people with disabilities, the centre also includes environmentally-friendly features in the form of solar panels, which will generate some of the electricity used in the centre.

The Council is now working with Parkwood Leisure to implement a leisure programme across all three of the borough’s leisure centres. Co-ordinating activities across the three centres will ensure that the most popular activities will be available in at least one of the centres at any time.

The Official Opening of the new leisure centre will take place later in the year and more details will be published in the local press and on the Council’s website nearer the time.

Leisurewatch

Leisurewatch launch

Leisurewatch launch

Leisurewatch, a community-based initiative that aims to reduce the risks to children and young people, has been launched in Bexley's leisure centres.

Many parents and carers worry about the risks posed to their children by people in the community who may harm them. Leisurewatch brings together trained staff in leisure venues and police officers responsible for community safety in order to reduce this risk.

The Leisurewatch signs at Erith Leisure Centre, Crook Log Leisure Centre and Lamorbey Swimming Pool, show that staff have been trained to be observant and aware of the safety of children and young people and know what to do if they see behaviour that causes any concern.

You can also help by telling staff immediately if you see anyone behaving in a way that causes you concern.

For more information please contact the Leisurewatch Coordinator at Crook Log Leisure Centre on 020 8304 9090.

The new Erith Leisure Centre has achieved national recognition as an accredited sports facility under the Inclusive Fitness Initiative (IFI), which is sanctioned by the English Federation of Disability Sport.

Accreditation has enabled Parkwood Leisure, the operator of the leisure centre, to purchase additional fitness studio equipment, which allows many adults with a range of physical and sensory impairments and many adults with special needs to enjoy a full body workout for the first time.

The new equipment is fully integrated into the centre's brand new fitness studio, which means that disabled and non-disabled gym users can exercise alongside each other.

For further information contact Kerry Young, IFI Activator at Erith Leisure Centre, on Telephone number:01322 350271.

Erith Leisure Centre reopens

The new and dramatically improved Erith Leisure Centre
Erith Leisure Centre (May 2005)

The launch of Erith Leisure Centre has been heralded a huge success, as young and old alike enjoyed a fantastic day in the sun. Cannons of confetti and applause from the crowd greeted Mayor of Bexley, Councillor John Shepheard, and Olympic 400m runner Iwan Thomas and they sank the plunger to officially open the Centre.

As the first centre in the borough to house both wet and dry facilities on site, Erith boasts a fantastic array of leisure opportunities for the entire community. A 25-metre 6-lane swimming pool with an innovative movable floor replaces the old Riverside facility, whilst a teaching pool sits nearby. The sports hall has been designed and built to Sport England specifications (a project partner), and offers opportunities for a wide range of sports and activities.

With a health and fitness suite, weights floor, créche and spacious soft play area, the new centre really does attempt to cater for the whole family. The project also succeeds in further recognising the Council's aspirations of increasing physical activity in Bexley and developing communities through sport.

Although faced with a few inevitable teething problems, customer response to the new Centre has been extremely positive on the whole. People have predicted that the facility will ultimately 'be a success for the community' and have been keen to emphasise the benefits that the Centre offers. These opinions have been mirrored by the attendance figures: in the first eight days alone, over 9,000 people tried out their new Centre - more than three times the attendance for the two previous sites (the Sports Centre and Riverside Swimming Pool) for the same length of time.

To find out more about your new Erith Leisure Centre, call Telephone number:01322 350271, email E-mail:erith@parkwood-leisure.co.uk or visit External Link:www.leisure-centre.com or you can just drop in at Avenue Road, Erith.
