Bexley Claims National Award

Richard Caborn presenting the certificate to Lorraine Everard

Richard Caborn, Minister for Sport, presents the award to Lorraine Everard, Bexley's Partnership Development Manager

Bexley (Trinity) School Sports Partnership is celebrating after receiving a coveted National Development Award. The award, for 'Making the most of out-of-school-hours-learning (OSHL)', was presented by Minister for Sport, Richard Caborn, at the National School Sports Coordinators Conference.

The Partnership has been working with children with social and behavioural difficulties and has been using PE and sport as a mechanism for improving these skills. The Partnership has come in for specific praise for its innovative work using adventure-based learning (ABL). ABL involves students being set tasks and working together to solve them, developing leadership, communication skills, respect for others and increased social responsibility.

Partnership Development Manager Lorraine Everard has been justifiably delighted with the success:

"We gave the children a series of fun, adventure based tasks where they could experience failure as well as success and can learn how to cope with both. The feedback from the head teachers has been amazing. There has been a real improvement in behaviour among the students that took part."

The Minister for Sport afforded a similarly glowing reference, stating that "this sort of activity outside the classroom has shown itself to be a real force for good and I hope schools across the country will learn from the enterprising work done by the Bexley Partnership".

The highly successful School Sports Coordinator Scheme has been operating in Bexley for the last three years, and has recently moved into a new and exciting phase. The Hurstmere and Chislehurst & Sidcup Partnership began this September and will be working on the same objectives of Raising Standards (both PE and whole school), Primary Liaison, Out of Hours Learning, School to Community, Coaching and Leadership and Strategic Planning.
