Coaching For Teachers
The Background
Government interest in physical education has recognised the need to provide quality teaching at grass roots level, particularly in schools. For over seven years, the Coaching for Teachers (CfT) programme has successfully provided opportunities for teachers and Adults Other Than Teachers (AOTTs) who contribute to school sport through the extended curriculum.
Within the National Physical Education and School Sport Professional Development Programme, the primary aim for Coaching for Teachers is to improve the quality of teaching, coaching and learning in schools sport. By attending sports governing body courses, teachers and AOTTs can improve the quality of their sessions, learn new sports, update their knowledge and obtain qualifications.
The Coaching for Teachers Programme has the support of the British Association
of Advisors and Lecturers in Physical Education (BAALPE) and the Physical Education
Association of the United Kingdom (PEAUK), is funded by DCSF and co-ordinated
and managed by Sports Coach UK. The funding provided by DCSF means that the courses
offered are free or heavily subsidised.
Who should attend?
The courses are targeted at primary and secondary school teachers. PE specialists and teachers of other subjects who contribute to out of school hours sport are welcome. Learning Support Assistants and adults other than teachers (AOTTs), who are actively involved in PE and recommended by the school are also welcome to attend, including, in some instances, Post 16 students following the CSLA course. The courses offer new skills and practises for teachers wanting to enhance their school sport programme. Many of these skills and practices will of course be transferable into the National Curriculum. So, whether you teach sport through the curriculum, in an after school club or in a voluntary capacity, these courses can help to develop coaching skills and provide the opportunity to learn new techniques.
