Increasing physical activity in Bexley
and developing communities through sport
Sports Strategy
Developing Communities Through Sport
A five year Sports Strategy for Bexley was approved in the summer of
2003, following substantial consultation with the local sporting community.
The strategy is designed to create a framework for sport across the borough
by identifying the benefits that sport can bring to everyday life as well
as encouraging the development of programmes and partnerships aimed at
realising the full potential of sport within the community.
Objectives within the Strategy focus on seven key areas:
- the strategic planning of sports facilities;
- sports development;
- target groups;
- target areas;
- voluntary sports clubs;
- advice and information;
- funding.
Key actions have been identified within each of these
seven areas, and developed into a five year action plan
(2003-2008), enabling strategy to become reality.
The Sports Strategy was launched at Hurstmere School, on 24th March 2004. At
the time of the launch, Councillor Geoffrey Hacker, Cabinet Member for Leisure,
Arts and Culture stated,
"If properly harnessed, sport and leisure can help tackle issues such as
crime reduction, drug prevention, social exclusion and ill-health. Bexley Council
recognises this and is working with many partners to ensure that sport and leisure
creates the most powerful impact on the community as possible."

Physical Activity Strategy
Let's Get Moving!
Bexley Council Leisure Services have been working in close partnership with
Bexley Care Trust to develop and implement a borough-wide Physical Activity Strategy,
in response to growing national concerns about rapidly increasing levels of inactivity
and obesity.
The strategy is entitled "Let's Get Moving!" and its overwhelming
message is that people do not have to run a marathon or go to the gym to reap
the considerable health benefits of physical activity. Simple changes in lifestyle
such as getting off the bus one stop earlier than usual, thereby encouraging
some extra walking, can make a big difference in improving people's levels of
physical activity and ultimately their health.
Leisure Services and the Care Trust are committed to:
- Increasing the amount of physical exercise taken by people living in Bexley;
- Stressing the health benefits of taking regular exercise;
- Helping people seeing physical activity as being part of every day life;
- Increasing the opportunities for physical activity;
- Getting 70% of Bexley's population reasonably active (i.e. 30 minutes of
moderate exercise 5 times a week) by 2020.

Diversity and Inclusion Strategy
Increasing Physical Activity in Bexley and Developing Communities through
Sport
The Diversity and Inclusion Strategy looks at the barriers to sport and physical
activity currently faced by ethnic minority groups and looks at ways in which
these hurdles can be overcome. It focuses on key themes voiced by many different
communities and proposes a vision of increased participation, increased awareness
and increased equity.
The strategy has been recognised as a significant step towards achieving equality
of opportunity in sport and physical activity, and is one of the first in the
country to include a commitment to achieve accreditation through Sporting Equals'
'Promoting Racial Equality: a standard for local authority sport and leisure
services'.

Playing Pitch Strategy
From Jumpers to Goalposts
Playing pitches are important recreational features and provide open space in both urban and rural landscapes. In view of this, and in line with Government Planning Guidance, Bexley Council have recently launched a Playing Pitch Strategy for the Borough.
The Strategy provides a framework for the future provision and management of pitches in Bexley, highlighting key issues such as improving provision and access, development of new sites, and monitoring levels of use.
The Playing Pitch Strategy 'From Jumpers to Goalposts' uses guidelines set
out in the Sport England report - 'Towards a Level Playing Field,' which acknowledges
the significant role that pitches play.
