Monthly Progress on Site 2006

December 2006

Carriageway surfacing works are finished on the south carriageway between Perry Street Roundabout and Howbury Lane Roundabout and on the north carriageway between Howbury Lane Roundabout and Kennet Road. Footpaths have also been surfaced to binder course along these sections to permit pedestrian use. Traffic is now running on the new sections of road.

The following footpaths are closed to allow the next sections of road to be prepared for the next surfacing visit: The north footpath between Perry Street Roundabout and Howbury Lane Roundabout and the south footpath between the pedestrian crossing by Optima Park and Kennet Road.

Surfacing the south carriageway between Kennet Road and Howbury Lane roundabout

Surfacing the south carriageway between Kennet Road and Howbury Lane roundabout

The next phase of surfacing is programmed to start on Monday 11th Dec. The following sections of road are programmed to be surfaced before Christmas – Howbury Lane Roundabout to Kennet road south carriageway & Perry Street Roundabout to Howbury Lane north carriageway.

Howbury Lane will be under temporary traffic lights for 2 weeks from 27th November to allow for the laying of a TFL traffic signals duct under the railway bridge. The westbound entrance into Howbury Lane from the roundabout will be closed so a traffic diversion will be in place which will divert traffic up around Perry Street Roundabout to access Howbury Lane.

Bridge over River Cray

Bridge over River Cray

The new traffic splitter island on Perry Street Roundabout at Perry Street has been constructed but additional work in this area will be required in the new year. This additional work may require temporary traffic signals on the main roundabout. Various footpath works are ongoing in the Perry Street area prior to the Christmas Holiday.

The second phase of the bridge over the River Cray has started this month. This work includes removal of a redundant services bridge after completion of electricity cable diversion and removal of a small section of the existing road bridge. The sheet piling on both sides of the river is finished and the capping beam construction along both banks of the river is programmed to be finished before Christmas. Works to construct the new bridge deck are programmed to start after the Christmas/New Year Holiday period.

Surfacing of the east side of the new Kennet Road roundabout is completed

Surfacing of the east side of the new Kennet Road roundabout is completed

Elsewhere roadworks will continue in the Crayford Way/Jolly Farmers area and work will commence (off carriageway) to the second phase of the bridge over the River Cray. This work includes removal of a redundant services bridge after completion of electricity cable diversion and removal of a small section of the existing road bridge prior to sheet piling and capping beam construction along both banks of the river. Works to construct the new bridge deck are programmed to start after the Christmas/New Year Holiday period.

Footpath construction on the south side between Kennet road and Mayplace Avenue is continuing this month. There is no right turn out of Mayplace Avenue to allow for this construction. Pedestrians must cross the road in front of Thames House and use the north footpath only.

The site will be closed for two weeks from Saturday 23rd December 2006 to Sunday 7th January 2007 inclusive. During this period there will be a skeleton crew on site to maintain the traffic management and deal with any minor site safety issues. If you need to get in touch with us during this time our helpline number 01322 528701 will be diverted to Dennis Palmer, a member of the Carillion staff.

November 2006

Carriageway surfacing works commenced on 6th November to the north carriageway of Thames Road at the junction with Kennet Road. Between 6th and 18th of November surfacing should be completed on the south carriageway between Perry Street Roundabout and Howbury Lane Roundabout and on the north carriageway between Howbury Lane Roundabout and Kennet Road (the latter junction being done in two halves). Footpaths will also be surfaced to binder course along these sections to permit pedestrian use.

Kennet Road Surfacing

Kennet Road Surfacing

On completion of surfacing in these sections, temporary ramps will be installed to permit access to properties on the north side of Thames Road between Perry Street and Howbury Lane roundabouts. Traffic will then be switched to the new sections of carriageway and work will commence on the north carriageway between Perry Street roundabout and Howbury Lane roundabout together with south carriageway between Howbury Lane roundabout and Mayplace Avenue. During these works, pedestrians will use the south side footway between Perry Street and Howbury Lane roundabout and the north side footway between Howbury Lane roundabout and Mayplace Avenue.

Laying Blacktop on Thames Road

Laying Blacktop on Thames Road

Pedestrian lights at the south west side of Howbury Lane Roundabout will be disconnected on Sunday 12th November while surfacing is laid to the south carriageway. Temporary signals will be in operation until permanent signals are re-connected (programmed for 18th November). Also programmed for 18th November is the disconnection of the pedestrian signal crossing lights at Optima Park and re-connection in their new location on the north carriageway.

Construction of a new traffic splitter island on Perry Street Roundabout at Perry Street itself will commence on 20th November. Because of inadequate road width to maintain two way traffic during construction, works will need temporary traffic signals on the main roundabout for approximately one week. Various footpath works should also be ongoing in the Perry Street area prior to the Christmas Holiday.

Thames Road Surfacing

Thames Road Surfacing

On removal of these signals from Perry Street, the right turn at Howbury Lane roundabout towards Howbury Lane will be temporarily closed on 27th November and all westbound traffic diverted onwards to Perry Street Roundabout. (Traffic accessing Howbury Lane/Optima Park area will need to return from Perry Street roundabout). Construction works (including duct laying) will be carried out at Howbury Lane under traffic light control as space is insufficient to retain two way traffic.
