Christ Church, ErithClock Tower

The Clock Tower was opened in 1912 to commemorate the Coronation of King George V the previous year. Previously the Pincott Memorial stood here (it has been relocated further down the Broadway). There are alcoves for four busts on the tower, but only two are used. One of which is of King George V, the other is William Morris, the designer and writer who lived in The Red House, at the local hamlet of Upton, between 1860 and 1865, now Upton Road at the far end of the Broadway.

Christ Church, ErithDanson House

Danson Park was originally set out as a private estate and its design has been attributed to Capability Brown and to a Mr Richmond. It provides an excellent setting for the 18th Century Mansion which an immensely wealthy merchant John Boyd purchased the site and built Danson House, designed by Robert Taylor (who also was the architect of the Bank of England) in the style of a classic Palladian villa, between 1762 and 1767. At the same time the gardens were laid out in a style appropriate to such an important house.

The Danson House, which is a Grade 1 Listed Building surrounded by attractive ornamental gardens, is leased to English Heritage for 999 years from 1997, and is open to the public on special viewing days only. The park became a public open space in the early 20th Century when the Bean family sold the property to the Urban District Council of Bexley. The Mansion is currently managed by a trust.

Red HouseRed House

Red House was built in 1860 for the Victorian artist, designer and poet William Morris.

The architect, Philip Webb, designed the house in the Victorian Gothic style to reflect Morris' love of things medieval.

Morris moved into the house after his marriage to Jane Burden and it was to become the couple's home for five years.

The artist and friend of Morris, Dante Gabriel Rossetti, praised the house as 'a most noble work in every way, and more a poem than a house, but an admirable place to live in too'.

The house, which retains some original furniture and decor, is now privately owned. It opens for guided tours on the first full weekend of every month except January.

A Friends of the Red House Group supports the present owners of the Red House in the upkeep of the House. For details, write to the above address enclosing a Stamped, Addressed Envelope (S.A.E.) or International Reply Coupon (IRC).
