Erith Regeneration Updates

Following substantial earlier investment in Erith by businesses and public sector agencies, Bexley Council secured over £6 million from the Office of the Deputy Prime Minister's External LinkSustainable Communities Fund to help regenerate Erith's town centre.

Successful improvements include:

  • Housing developments along Erith Riverside
  • Morrisons' superstore
  • Primary health care centre
  • Community facilities
  • Refurbishment and extension of the Erith Riverside Shopping Centre
  • Inclusion of Erith Town Centre in the Mayor of London's External Link100 London Public Spaces programme

The External LinkDepartment for Communities & Local Government, External LinkLondon Development Agency and External LinkWoolwich & North Bexley Partnership have committed to further investment in Erith. The money will be spent on a range of projects including a new library, a training support centre, housing and improvements to the public realm.

Six different bus routes serve Erith, including a Mobility Bus every Thursday, offering links to Queen Elizabeth Hospital, the parks at Danson, Hall Place and Lesnes Abbey, and many indoor leisure and retail attractions. In all they provide 32 departures per hour during shopping hours, a rise of 33 percent since 1998.

The local train operator offers regular services to Dartford and London Cannon Street, during shopping hours some eastbound services turn west after Slade Green through Bexley and Hither Green to Cannon Street, so please check the platform signs before boarding. Access to the westbound platform requires the use of a footbridge, so some passenger might prefer to travel to London via Hither Green. Interchange with the DLR is available at Greenwich and Lewisham whilst connections to Fastrack buses can be made in Dartford.

A series of traffic management schemes have been designed to assist local residents and traders. Many people, however, have expressed concerns about parking difficulties in Erith. The Council therefore carried out an informal consultation with the local community and now proposes to introduce a Controlled Paring Zone (CPZ) in an area around the town centre, this would be similar in principle to several zones in operation near other suburban stations.

Chief Executive of the Thames Gateway visits Erith

Judith Armitt, newly appointed Chief Executive of the Thames Gateway, enjoyed a guided tour of central Erith on 14 December 2006. Ms Armitt told her host Councillor Ian Clement that she was impressed by what she had seen and was excited about the town's future potential.

Once the Chief Executive of Medway Council, Judith is now the most senior officer in government with the role of co-ordinating policies and investment across the Thames Gateway. This regeneration area includes those parts of Bexley Borough to the north of the A207/A220 Gravel Hill/A2 east of the Black Prince junction. Read more about the visit here.
