Bexley Youth Service
About Us
The purpose of Youth Work is to facilitate
and support young people's growth
through dependence to independence,
by encouraging their personal and
social development and enabling them
to have a voice, influence and place in
their communities and society.
Who do we work with?
Priority group- young people aged 13-19 with 25%
of the Service targeting 11-13 and 19-25 year olds.
Targeted groups include:
- Young people not in education, employment
or training-NEETs
- Those with a Learning disability
- Looked After young people or those recently
leaving care
- Teenage parents
- Black and ethnic minority young people
- Challenging and at risk young people
We also work with a number of partner groups, including the Youth Council,
Connexions, Schools, Youth Offending Team, Voluntary
Sector, Statutory Sector, and Elected Members.
How do you plan work?
Planning for Youth Work is based on the Bexley Youth
Work Curriculum. The four core curriculum areas linked
to the five outcomes of 'Every Child Matters' are:
- Health and economic well being
- Recognise and enjoy achievement
- Self and Social Awareness
- Citizenship
The curriculum framework will enable the Youth Service
build on what is best practice in current youth work, as
the foundation for meeting the changing needs of
young people in Bexley.
What does the government expect of a local authority?
Local authorities should ensure that young people are clear about the
service that will be provided. The pledge should be underpinned by
a local commitment to the UN convention of the Rights of the Child.
Bexley Youth Service will:
- Provide a safe, relaxed, fun and inviting environment
- Provide well equipped centres and projects
- Listen to young peoples views
- Respect young people's views
- Treat young people with respect
- Ensure a sense of ownership amongst young people
- Show enthusiasm and give encouragement
- Provide a referral service for guidance and counselling if needed
- Provide recognition through accreditation
- Ensure that young people are valued for their input in planning
and evaluation in running of centres and projects
- Encourage integration with the whole community
- Ensure access for all
