The election to elect a Mayor for London and 25 London Assembly Members will be held on Thursday 2 May 2024.

Eligible voters in Bexley can vote for:

• The Mayor of London
• Constituency London Assembly Member
• London-wide Assembly Member

One Mayor, 14 constituency assembly members and 11 London-wide assembly members will be elected.

Who can vote in this election?

You will need to be registered to vote, people who can vote in this election are:

• British (or British Overseas Territory) Citizens residing in the United Kingdom
• Qualifying Commonwealth citizens
• Citizens of the Republic of Ireland
• European Union citizens

Please note: British citizens living overseas (who are not Members of the Armed Forces, Crown Servants, British Council employees or their spouse or civil partner) are not entitled to vote in this election.

Voting

There will be three ballot papers issued to you:

• voting for the London Mayor (pink ballot paper) - you have one vote (X) for the candidate you wish to the Mayor of London. They are elected using the ‘first past the post system’
• voting for the Constituency London Assembly Member (yellow ballot paper) - you have one vote (X) for the candidate you wish to represent the Bexley and Bromley constituency. The Constituency Members are elected using the ‘first past the post system’.
• voting for the London-wide Assembly Members (orange ballot paper) - you have one vote (X) for the candidate you wish to represent the whole of London on the London Assembly. London-wide Assembly Members are elected using a form of proportional representation called the ‘Modified D’Hondt Formula’.

Following the introduction of the Elections Act 2022 from May 2023, voters will be required to show photographic identification at polling stations before they are given a ballot paper.

Acceptable ID

You may already have a form of photo ID that is acceptable. You can use any of the following:

• passport
• driving licence (including provisional license)
• Blue Badge
• certain concessionary travel cards
• identity card with PASS mark (Proof of Age Standards Scheme)
• biometric Immigration Document
• Defence identity card
• certain national identity cards

Only original documents are accepted; scanned images or copies will not be accepted.

The Electoral Commission has more information about which forms of photo ID will be accepted.

Expired documents

Expired photo ID documents can be used as long as the photograph still looks like you.

Name changes

The name on your photo ID must be the same name you used to register to vote, unless you bring additional evidence to support the change e.g. marriage certificate.

Voter Authority Certificate (VAC)

If you don’t have an accepted form of photo ID, you can apply for a free Voter Authority Certificate to use as photo ID at the polling station. The Voter Authority Certificate is an official document which will contain your name and photograph and can be used for voting purposes.

A VAC is solely for use at polling stations when voting and cannot be used as photo ID for anything else.

Proxy voting

If you appoint a proxy, then the person who you have trusted to vote on your behalf  will need to show photo ID or apply for a Voter Authority Certificate.

Voting by post

You can apply to vote by post on the GOV.UK website. To ensure that you receive your postal vote at the earliest opportunity, please apply as soon as you can.

Postal voters do not need to provide photo ID. However, if postal votes are being hand delivered, an extra form must be completed and only 5 plus their own can be handed in per person.

Due to the statutory timetable, postal vote packs cannot be printed until nominations close in the middle of April, which means these may not be dispatched until 7 to 10 days before the day of poll. If this is not suitable you may wish to apply for a proxy vote instead.
