Evacuees and the Saturday Penny exhibition
Bexley Local Studies and Archive Centre partnered the University of Greenwich to research and create a small exhibition on the evacuation of children from Erith in September 1939.
This exhibition presents previously unseen archive sources, including letters from evacuated children and staff.
It also tells the story of the Mayor of Erith, Reverend John Wells Wilkinson, distribution of a penny to each evacuee to spend on what they wished. In appreciation of what was referred to as the 'Saturday Penny', the Mayor received numerous thank you letters from evacuated children and teachers. Some of these letters are reproduced in the exhibition.
