Our offer for young adults leaving the Council's care
The following information is about the support that is available to young adults who have been in the care of the London Borough of Bexley and are now aged 18 to 25.
In April 2017 the Children and Social Work Act became law and the support for young adults leaving care has been extended to include young people aged 22 to 25 who are not in education.
Local Authorities have a duty to support care experienced young people to move successfully into independence and to make all young adults aware of what support is available to them. The information explains your entitlements as a young adult leaving care, and has links to more detailed guides for your information. These are all available in paper form and can be adapted in various ways to make them accessible for all. Please contact your personal adviser or the young adults leaving care duty desk on 020 8303 7777 if you need further help.
The Government have introduced a new scheme, which primarily is to offer additional employment support to all care leavers during the move from being looked after to independence. More information is available at Care Leaver Covenant.
The covenant is a 'promise' that employers and other professionals in the community will make offers of employment and apprenticeships, amongst other offers yet to be published. It is a very new, and exciting development. There is a free app downloadable on both the App Store and Google Play. Keep an eye out for further developments in the very near future.
