Combat textile waste at home with TRAID

Bexley residents have responded enthusiastically to the call to help combat textile waste by using the free home collection service run by TRAID.

Since the partnership between the Council and TRAID launched in September 2022 over 150 residents have booked a collection, helping to divert over 4.6 tonnes of textiles from incineration.

Textiles are one of the biggest polluters and clothing consumption in the UK is rising.

Clothes that are collected by TRAID are transformed into high-quality stock for charity shops to resell. The funds raised are committed to global projects which improve conditions and working practices in the textile industry.

The service is open to all Bexley households, including flats, and allows residents to book a collection on a day that suits them.

Many residents will have clothes they no longer wear but are still in good enough condition to be passed on to someone else. Donating clothing is a practical way to support a more sustainable way of living.

The service is ideal for residents who have a lot of clothes to donate at one time. You can book a collection for a minimum of 1 large bag or 3 small bags of clothing, but TRAID encourages residents to donate more than the minimum amount, as this helps the charity to deliver a more efficient service.

As part of your main clothing donation, you can also include a small bag of broken small/medium-sized electrical items for recycling, such as kettles and toasters.

You can book a free collection by:

A collector in a branded TRAID van will collect the donations from you on the agreed day.

Councillor Peter Craske, Cabinet Member for Places, said:

In just the first few months of this new partnership, Bexley residents have already diverted over 4.6 tonnes of textile waste going to incineration. This is a fantastic achievement.

We have recently launched our Climate Change statement and action plan and are keen to take practical steps to address climate change. Recycling textiles is a small action we can all make which will help make a big difference.

By donating to TRAID, you can help reduce your carbon footprint, help to protect the environment, and raise money for TRAID’s charitable projects".

Lorna, a Sidcup resident, said:

I heard about TRAID at an upcycling workshop run by Bexley and learned that I could earn 400 Bexley Green points if I reuse any unwanted clothes via this doorstep collection scheme. So, I put all my unwanted clothing and textiles (sheets and towels) in two black bags and called to book my slot.

I was delighted with the service I received. Not only did TRAID telephone me on the day saying what time they would be in the area, they arrived promptly in a large TRAID van and collected the bags which I handed to the driver at my door ensuring they were reused correctly."

If you're having a wardrobe clear out, or simply have some items you no longer need but are in good condition, book a collection with TRAID.

It's quick and easy to use and every item donated helps to make a difference.
