As you would expect there is a process that all potential carers go through.
We sat down with a local couple currently going through the fostering application process. They shared their hopes, challenges and what it’s really like preparing to open their home and hearts to children in care.
Question: What inspired you to consider fostering?
Answer: We’ve always wanted to foster - it’s something that’s been in our hearts for a long time. Over the years, we’ve known a few people who’ve fostered, and we saw that while it can be challenging, it’s also deeply rewarding. We just needed to wait until the timing felt right for us.
Question: How have you been preparing your home?
Answer: We’ve worked hard to meet all fostering requirements. That’s included fire safety checks, making sure our boiler is certified, and creating a warm, welcoming space for a child. We’ve decorated the room and we’re waiting to furnish it once we pass panel. It’s been exciting preparing for this new chapter.
Question: How does fostering fit into your current lifestyle?
Answer: We both work right now, but we’re planning to adjust based on the needs of the children placed with us. I may reduce my hours or stop working altogether, depending on what’s best.
My wife will take time off initially to help the children settle. Our family has been incredibly supportive - they’re thrilled for us.
Question: What has the application process been like?
Answer: Honestly, it’s been a positive experience. We were a little nervous at first, but our social worker Adele, and Sara, a trainee social worker, have been fantastic. Over time, it started to feel less like an assessment and more like a journey we were all on together. We’ve felt very supported.
Question: What are you most looking forward to as foster carers?
Answer: We’re looking forward to offering a stable, structured, and loving home - a place where young people can feel safe and supported. We want to be part of their journey, wherever that may lead.
Question: Do you have any advice for others thinking about fostering?
Answer: Definitely go for it — but make sure you’re ready for the responsibility. It’s not something to take lightly, but it’s also one of the most meaningful things you can do. You have the chance to make a real difference in someone’s life.
