Education Commissioning Plans

The Council has a responsibility to monitor the supply and demand for school places and ensure there is sufficient capacity to meet demand by planning for growth whilst also responding to changes in demand, ensuring the sustainability of all schools. These documents set out the approach that is being taken by the Council to plan for mainstream and Special Educational Needs (SEN) school places over the next two to three years.

The Plans have been developed during a period in which we have seen a decrease in the demand for spaces in Primary schools. This is more prevalent in some planning areas but all areas are being affected, despite the housing growth seen in some areas of Bexley. This reduced demand is more profound in primary schools and we are not yet seeing as much of an impact in our secondary schools.

We have also created a Commissioning Plan for Special Schools and which demonstrates the current pressures we are facing, the different types of need that we have to accommodate and our overall strategic aim of providing a good education to pupils with SEN and preventing them from having to travel out of the borough.

The Plans include:

  • The Bexley Context
  • The challenges of addressing reduced demand for places in mainstream schools
  • How new demand for SEN places will be forecast and met
  • How surplus spaces in schools could be utilised
  • Next Steps
