2. Place Directorate - Neighbourhoods, Housing and Strategic Planning

The Place Academy provides a structured learning pathway that highlights key roles, development opportunities, and career progression routes within the Place Directorate. 

This pathway ensures that all employees have access to relevant training, skill development, and career advancement opportunities.

Career pathways within the directorate are divided into the following areas:

  • Highways, Traffic, and Infrastructure
    Responsible for maintaining roads, streetlights, parking, pavements, and other essential transport infrastructure, ensuring safe and efficient movement across the Borough. This team also plays a key role in planning and implementing road safety measures, traffic management schemes, and sustainable transport solutions.
     
  • Environmental Services
    Oversees waste management, recycling services, and public protection, ensuring a clean, safe, and sustainable environment for residents, enforcing environmental regulations, investigating waste-related issues.
     
  • Economic Development
    Supports local businesses, employment, and skills development, helping residents gain qualifications and access job opportunities. This team works closely with businesses, education providers, and community groups to foster economic growth and drive investment in the Borough.
     
  • Library Services
    Manages libraries and archives, providing information, books, digital resources, computer support, activities, and cultural events for the community. Libraries also serve as community hubs, offering variety of educational programs, clubs, study spaces, and digital inclusion initiatives to support lifelong learning.
     
  • Strategic Planning
    Focuses on long-term development, ensuring that planning decisions meet the residents future needs while enforcing regulations on unauthorised building works. This team also collaborates with stakeholders to develop policies that promote sustainable development and infrastructure improvements.
  • Planning & Regulations
    Oversees building control, inspections, and compliance with planning legislation to ensure safe and sustainable development within the Borough. This team also assesses applications for new developments, ensuring they align with local planning policies and contribute positively to the community.
     
  • Housing Services
    Supports residents with housing needs, including temporary accommodation, and ensures compliance with housing regulations. Officers also work on housing development projects, homelessness prevention strategies, and initiatives to improve housing quality across our Borough.
     
  • Leisure, Parks, and Open Spaces
    Maintains parks and recreational areas, ensuring they are safe, attractive, and accessible to the public. This includes the conservation of green spaces, development of community leisure programs, and enhancement of biodiversity within urban and natural environments.
     
  • Parking Services
    Bexley and Bromley jointly operate a Shared Parking Service (SPS) based at Bromley Civic Centre, with officers from both boroughs enforcing traffic and parking regulations fairly and effectively. The SPS team also handles penalty charge disputes and focuses on continuous improvement to meet best practices and regulatory changes.
